Washington, D.C. Engineers Talk Careers with Young Women

Oct 2, 2019

As part of our Washington, D.C. office’s longstanding support for the Washington School for Girls (WSG) in the Capital’s Anacostia neighborhood, an STV employee volunteered for several events that benefit female students in grades 3 through 8.

WSG is an independent Catholic Day School that provides education to girls who live in underserved communities. The school prides itself on the fact that nearly 98 percent of its graduates go on to complete high school in an area of the country where the average is around 50 percent.

Traffic engineer Karlynn Kerney, P.E., participated in the interactive WSG Career Day, where she spoke to students about traffic safety. Tying into Washington D.C.’s Vision Zero pedestrian/road safety initiative, Kerney’s presentation invited participants to observe an intersection and recommend safety improvements including sidewalks, traffic signals, crosswalks, bike lanes, and even speed cameras.
