LIRR Bridge Replacement

STV’s resident engineering and inspection (REI) team is a part of an award-winning effort that will transform the roadways in and around John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

The Associated General Contractors of New York State awarded STV, along with WSP and HNTB, its 2021 Excellence in Partnering Award for Informal Partnering, for the team’s work on the demolition, widening, and replacement of a steel rail bridge, Atlantic Six – owned by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) – over the Van Wyck Expressway.

STV performed REI services for this project, which is part of a larger a $1.2 billion infrastructure plan that will add a fourth high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction on the Van Wyck Expressway.

“Atlantic Six was the first of several bridges along the Van Wyck to be replaced. There is now a two-span structure that will facilitate the other widening efforts along the expressway,” said Charles Maass, P.E., senior engineer and resident engineer.

A significant challenge to the team was also coordinating between the New York State Department of Transportation and LIRR so that construction operations complied with the railroad’s requirements while still remaining consistent with other facets of the Van Wyck’s improvement plan.

“I’m incredibly proud of the project team’s hard work, and very honored that we have won this award,” Maass said.
