Matthew Sangen, P.E., S.E., an associate and engineer for STV’s national buildings practice, was recently selected to serve on two American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) code committees as a Young Member Representative.
ASCE Standard 7 is an integral part of building codes in the United States. It describes the means for determining minimum design loads – including dead, live, soil, flood, tsunami, snow, rain, atmospheric ice, seismic, and wind loads, and their combinations – for general structural design. Sangen will serve the ASCE 7 Flood Load Subcommittee as the Secretary and Historian for the upcoming 2028 code cycle.
Additionally, Sangen will participate on the ASCE 24 committee for the upcoming 2024 code cycle. ASCE Standard 24 provides minimum requirements for the flood-resistant design and construction of structures located in flood hazard areas.
“Standards like ASCE 7 and ASCE 24 provide engineers with crucial resources to help ensure that buildings and structures are designed to withstand extreme events like hurricanes,” Sangen said. “As these events become more frequent and intense, it’s essential that codes and standards keep up with the hazards. I look forward to working with these committees to find ways to make our communities more resilient.”
Sangen is a structural engineer with more than 10 years of experience developing designs for a variety of projects, primarily transportation and educational facilities in the New York metropolitan area. He recently contributed to the structural analysis and design of Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A and several key storm resilience projects for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, New York City Transit (NYC Transit), Long Island Railroad, Metro-North Railroad, and NJ TRANSIT. He was the structural engineer for Hammels Wye Flood Mitigation, which protects critical assets along NYC Transit’s Rockaway Line and was selected for an ACEC New York Gold Award in 2020.
Sangen is an active member of the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) and was recently elected to the Board of Directors. He has served as a mentor for the ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York since 2016 and frequently volunteers in partnership with the Salvadori Center, having recently organized a career development event for high school students in New York City.
