Semper Paratus, Always Ready: Former Coast Guardsman Joins STV as DHS Client Team Leader
Jul 26, 2021
For Cdr. Mike Good, P.E., PMP, USCG (Ret.), a career in the U.S. Coast Guard took him to Antarctica, the Arctic Circle, and most recently, the Virginia Beach office of STV. Good has joined the firm to serve as our federal business development director and client team leader for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Good was a civil engineering officer in the Coast Guard for 22 years and retired in 2019. The son of a Marine, he grew aspiring to attend one of the service academies and pursue a military career.
“The Coast Guard Academy and Coast Guard as a service was my top priority, mainly because of its small size and humanitarian mission,” Good said.
While the Coast Guard is a military service, its day-to-day missions focus on public safety, the maritime industry, and protecting the natural environment. They operate under DHS during times of peace, maintaining the capabilities to support the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) when needed. One of Good’s most memorable assignments was responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was one of the first damage assessment teams to arrive on the west side of New Orleans.
“The total devastation of Coast Guard facilities and surrounding communities was immense,” Good said. “I was proud to be part of the initial response to assess damage and support survivors. All the different agencies came together with the common objective to triage immediate repairs and restore safe operations.”
The desire to be part of another strong team is part of what drew Good to STV.
“After my prior federal experience, my new role at STV is a great opportunity to continue serving in a different way, supporting the DHS Components’ missions with STV’s extensive architectural and engineering capabilities,” Good said.
