Projects Take Home Honors from ACEC NY

Jan 26, 2021

Innovative STV projects were recently honored by the American Council of Engineering Companies New York Chapter (ACEC New York) with Engineering Excellence Awards.

Receiving a Diamond Award in the Special Projects category was the Metro-North Railroad Patterson Bridge Replacements project, a key part of the agency’s East of Hudson Bridge Improvement Program. An ambitious slide-in bridge construction method was used for this challenging assignment, which also entailing protecting environmentally sensitive wetlands. STV provided resident engineering inspection, construction engineering inspection, and environmental inspection services for the demolition and replacement of the two, single-track rail bridges on the Upper Harlem Line.

The upgrading of the Alexander Hamilton Bridge Interchange for the New York State Department of Transportation was one of three assignments that won Platinum Awards. An innovative approach was used to upgrade the busy interchange’s ramps while minimizing disruptions to traffic and the surrounding South Bronx community. STV was the lead designer for the design-build team. Rather than use the original plan to replace the ramps span-by-span which would require weekend road closures over a 26-month period, STV’s design team developed an alternate proposal that kept traffic flowing and minimized disruptions for motorists and the surrounding community.

For New York City Transit’s Jamaica Bus Depot, STV prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), evaluating three candidate alternatives to identify the option that best achieves the future bus depot requirements for maintenance, operations, and bus storage capacity. The goal is to modernize the depot and provide the infrastructure needed to accommodate up to 300 buses. This would allow NYC Transit to serve current and potential future bus route assignments/reconfigurations, and accommodate new bus service demands in Queens; and enable the agency to maintain and deploy a modern bus fleet that includes articulated and electric buses.

STV’s Flood Mitigation project for 17 of NYC Transit’s Fan Plants and Adjacent Tunnels grew out of the agency’s ‘Fix & Fortify’ program, which was developed in the aftermath of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy to better protect critical infrastructure against future storms. STV prepared a master plan, engineering feasibility study, as well as design plans and specifications for storm surge hardening and resiliency improvements to fan plants, emergency exits, ventilation structures, and other points of entry at 17 locations.

Awards will be presented at ACEC New York’s gala in the spring.
