Newark Liberty International Airport’s new Terminal A recently earned a prestigious 2023 Prix Versailles Special Prize for an Exterior. The global architecture and design award recognizes the “world’s most beautiful achievements.”

Presented annually since 2015 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Prix Versailles is a globally renowned architectural competition that shines a light on the finest contemporary projects around the world. It honors “innovation, creativity, reflections of local heritage, ecological efficiency and the values of social interaction and participation which the United Nations holds in high regard,” as cited by UNESCO. Terminal A was selected for a special prize from among six nominees across three continents in the airports category.

On behalf of the Tutor Perini/Parsons design-build consortium, and in association with Grimshaw, STV served as the architect- and engineer-of-record for the new three-level, 1-million-square-foot, 33-gate domestic terminal, the 660-foot-long pedestrian bridge that connects the terminal to a consolidated rental car facility, and an associated generator building. The $2.7 billion project represented the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s largest-ever investment in New Jersey and the state’s largest design-build project to date.

The new Terminal A has received numerous awards since opening in January 2023, including the 2023 Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) New Jersey Section, a Platinum Award in the Structural Systems category from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York), an Award of Merit in the Airport/Transit category and the Excellence in Sustainability Award from Engineering News-Record (ENR) New York. The facility also recently achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B, for which STV provided professional construction management services in joint venture with Tishman, secured the Prix Versailles for airports in 2021.
