Civil engineering specialist Claudia Tolley from STV’s Harrisburg, PA, office recently received the 2022 James T. Scroggin Award from her alma mater, Messiah University.

The award recognizes a graduating senior student from the College of Engineering for excellence in service, leadership and scholarship. Tolley graduated from Messiah last May with a B.S. in civil engineering and joined STV in June. She became interested in engineering when she attended Washington County Technical High School in Hagerstown, MD, where she grew up.

‘‘During my junior and senior years, I participated in Project Lead The Way, a pre-engineering program,” she said. “I took an intro to engineering course. We learned about designing houses and we also did an engineering design course. We got to pick something we were interested in and walk through the entire engineering design process.”

The Project Lead The Way program led to her decision to attend Messiah, one of the few Christian universities in the country with an accredited engineering program. Previously Messiah College, it achieved university status in 2020. For her first two years she took general engineering courses. The summer between her sophomore and junior years, Tolley had an internship at a civil engineering firm. “That’s what prompted me to go the civil route. As I started my junior year, I officially declared a civil engineering major and began taking courses specific to civil engineering.”

The annual James T. Scroggin Award is named for the chair of Messiah’s department of engineering in the 1980s and 90s, Tolley was nominated for the award by one of her professors.
