STV’s technical excellence was recently recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) with five projects taking home honors in the organization’s 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards.

Grand Central Madison: Diamond Award

The prestigious Diamond Award in the Transportation category went to Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Grand Central Madison, formerly known as East Side Access—one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the country.

Grand Central Madison is now a finalist to receive the Empire Award – ACEC New York’s highest honor – and is eligible to be entered into ACEC’s National EEA.

STV, as part of a tri-venture team of including WSP, Inc. and Parsons Corporation, provided tunnel engineering, environmental engineering and final design services for Grand Central Madison, the 700,000-square-foot terminal and concourse below Grand Central Terminal. Opened in January 2023, Grand Central Madison eases congestion at New York City’s Pennsylvania Station by extending the LIRR, the nation’s busiest commuter rail service, to Grand Central Terminal.

For over 30 years, STV has supported the MTA/LIRR in its long-term plan to expand LIRR capacity throughout the region.

Long Island Rail Road Elmont UBS Arena Station: Platinum Award

Elmont station train tracks

Receiving a Platinum Award award in the Transportation category is LIRR Elmont UBS Arena Station. This new station connects LIRR to the Queens and Elmont communities, as well as the new UBS Arena.

STV served as architect/engineer-of-record on a design-build team led by Judlau Contracting, an OHLA USA company. Designed and constructed during the height of the pandemic, the new station provides easy access to UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders hockey team. The project also recently won an Engineering News-Record (ENR) New York Award of Merit.

Newark Liberty International Airport New Terminal A: Platinum Award

The transformational Newark Liberty International Airport’s new Terminal A has received more industry honors, this time earning Platinum Award in the Structural Systems category from ACEC New York. The Terminal A redevelopment was the largest design-build infrastructure project in New Jersey state history.

STV served as architect/engineer-of-record, designing the new three-level, 1-million-square-foot, 33-gate domestic terminal, the pedestrian bridge that connects the terminal to a consolidated rental car facility, and a generator building. The project also received an ENR NY Award of Merit and an Excellence in Sustainability Award. The firm was named Designer of the Year by the Society of American Military Engineers, New York Post.

Battery Park City Ball Fields and Community Center Resilience Project: Platinum Award

The Battery Park City Ball Fields and Community Center Resilience project won an ACEC NY Platinum Award in the Special Projects category. The Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) has undertaken several major protection programs in Lower Manhattan to safeguard the neighborhood and its community spaces from flooding events, and this is the first completed project.

STV’s design team investigated various design alternatives for short-term perimeter protection, deployable barriers, and flood gates. The new, localized area protection system safeguards the 80,000-square-foot community space and the iconic ballfields from significant storm threats until the BPCA completes its broader community program over the next decade. The project was also named the 2022-23 Sustainability Project of the Year from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Metropolitan Section.

Brooklyn Bus Network Redesign Study: Gold Award

MTA’s Brooklyn Bus Network Redesign project received the Gold Award in the Studies and Research category. Aimed at improving bus travel in Brooklyn, the MTA selected STV to perform research and consulting engineering services. The firm evaluated existing conditions and proposed reimagined routes to better meet the needs of the borough’s bus riders.

The Brooklyn Bus Network Redesign is part of the MTA’s broader effort to comprehensively re-envision and improve its bus transit services throughout the five boroughs.
